How to achieve viral video success

Viral advertising and marketing campaigns are now acknowledged as one of the most effective (and cost effective) methods of spreading your company's message. Whether you are trying to build brand recognition, change consumer perceptions of your organisation or simply promote a product viral video is one of the most cost efficient ways to do it. But how can you ensure your viral efforts result in millions of views rather than tens? Well, according to top Google executive Gokul Rajaram the answer is simple... don't try! He actively counsels against strategic approaches to YouTube success, instead advocating regular uploads of new content - post videos, more videos and even more videos. The logic is that regular doses of new content serve to attract interest, build a following and engage the online community. Other advice YouTube are prepared to give is: Make your video stand out from the crowd (obviously!) Choose the category you place it in carefully, a well placed video will score higher ratings than an inappropriately placed one. Write a good description for it, in complete sentences. Well, now you know you've got no excuse not to succeed.

I thought of doing this, but to go viral it would probably in my case have to be something humorous and probably awful as well. It seems to me that videos that go viral have to be different - either exceptionally good and different, or horribly bad - but still different.
